  • St. Gerard's Senior hockey team have won the South Leinster league cup

St. Gerard's Senior hockey team have won the South Leinster league cup for the second year in a row beating a strong Holy Child Side.

St. Gerard's started the better team and with some sharp passing and clever marking of their opposite numbers they applied the pressure and after 20 min went 1-0 up from a lovely strike by Toria Moynaham. On the stroke of half time Holy Child had a short corner to tie the score but the Gerard's defence held strong and the teams turned with Gerard's holding a valuable 1-0 lead.

    Senior Leinster Hockey Cup 2011

It wasn't for long though, for 10 minutes into the second half a magnificent strike by Holy Child saw the sides level. But Gerard's weren’t going to lie down and were soon back ahead with a lovely goal from one of the schools many up and coming stars Bryony Biggam. Holy Child fought back and again the match was levelled with 5 minutes to go and it was on to extra time. St Gerard's carried on where they left off piling on the pressure but it wasn't until  4 minutes to go that fittingly enough Captain Haley Mulcahy drilled home a shot from the edge of the "D" to seal a very well deserved and hard fought victory.

Congratulations to all the girls and coaching staff who must be delighted how this team has developed and progressed throughout the year under new coach Brendon Carolan. There has been an incredible growth in the skills and talent within the school due in no small part to Sarah Scott's dedication as head of sport in nurturing and mentoring the schools investment in game and her team of coaches.

With four more finals this week the trophy cabinet is beginning to feel the strain!!!!!!

  • St. Gerard's Beat Roscrea 20-18 in Senior League Final

    Sweet Revenge - St. Gerard's 20- Roscrea 18

St Gerard's won  the Senior league for the third year in a row with a hard earned victory over Roscrea who had narrowly beaten them in the Semi Final of the Cup.

The game had a bit of déjà vu with Roscrea taking a 15-0 lead within 20 minutes, a very similar scenario to the semi final opening quarter. The lead was fully justified with lots of steady pressure by the Roscrea pack that lead to a good try , followed by a missed catch by Jett Desmond that lead to a turnover and second try. Desmond however made up for this early error with some ferocious tackles that kept Roscrea at bay later in the game.

Crosbie slotted over an easy penalty in front of the posts after 24 minutes to calm his team mates down, and added another just before half time to give St Gerard's some hope going into the break. All in all Roscrea were worthy leaders at half time and were definitely the sharper of the two sides.

After the break it was a different story ( just like Donnybrook three weeks ago). St Gerard's gradually got back in the game with two great breaks from Prendergast and solid support from O Brien, Hackett-Delaney and O Neill.  A quick throw in to Wojnar on the 50 minute mark took Roscrea by surprise ,and led to a well earned try by Symes. Suddenly it was 15-13 to Roscrea and game on....

Ten minutes later from another lineout O Rourke broke through from the back and scored a beauty just right of the posts. 20-15 to Gerard's and just 10 minutes of regular time plus stoppage to retain the cup.  A penalty attempt for Roscrea  was made a lot easier by Conan (who was immense throughout) when He threw the ball away resulted in a two point game and frenetic nail biting 13 minutes. St Gerard's kept their cool, defended beautifully, and held on to win the League for the third year in a row.

Well done lads You did us proud ( again!).

Eric Miller, Damo and Mick Mac......Well done...!!! Great to see all the hard work of the last few years really paying off. Bad luck Roscrea you put up one hell of a fight.

  • Mr. McMullan's blog - Rugby

First of all, a hearty ‘thank you’ to all those past pupils who responded to the potted history-of-St. Gerard’s-rugby article and to all of you who turned out in your hundreds to support us in our cup semi-final match V Roscrea. It was heart-warming to see students from our first Leaving Cert class (1977) right up to those of 2010 joining with our present cohort to support the cup representatives of 2011, in Donnybrook, on that day. One try separated us from a first St. Patrick’s Day appearance in the cup final.

We have put the disappointment of that day behind us by now and we are more determined than ever to show the Leinster rugby world what we are capable of. At 3pm on Wed next (March 30) at Donnybrook we renew acquaintance with Cistercian College, Roscrea – this time in the league final. We are at present the league champions and have been for two years and hope to return with the cup to Thornhill Road on Wed evening. It will not be easy, but, with the support of the school, students, staff, parents and past-pupils, the team will be striving might and main to achieve an incredible 3-in-a-row. So, please turn out, if you possibly can, on another auspicious day for St. Gerard’s rugby.

Three of our players, Steve, Jack and Conor will be going for their third Leinster League medal in a competition which has been won by eleven schools since its inception in 1994. Castleknock, King’s Hospital, Roscrea and St. Gerard’s have each won this competition twice. So, whoever wins on Wed, will emulate Gonzaga in winning it for a third time, but if St. Gerard’s win, they will be the only team to emulate Gonzaga’s feat of 3-in-a-row.

For the record, the past winners are:

    1994                                                        Castleknock College

    1995                                                        Cistercian College

    1996                                                        Newbridge College

    1997                                                        King’s Hospital

    1998                                                        St. Michael’s College

    1999                                                        St. Andrew’s College

    2000                                                        Wesley College

    2001                                                        Castleknock College

    2002                                                        Cistercian College

    2003                                                        Templeogue College

    2004                                                        King’s Hospital

    2005                                                        Gonzaga College

    2006                                                        Gonzaga College

    2007                                                        Gonzaga College

    2008                                                        C.B.C. Monkstown

    2009                                                        St. Gerard’s

    2010                                                        St. Gerard’s

    2011

So, turn out one and all and support the old Alma Mater on what, no matter what happens, will be another red-letter day in the history of St. Gerard’s.

In the words of Phil Coulter’s St. Gerard’s School song:-

                “In defeat or victory

We’ll be the best that we can be

St. Gerard’s, St. Gerard’s we’re faithful, strong and true

                  Our shining Alma Mater

                  We’ll remember you.”

  • Top Hockey Games for St. Gerard's

Well done to the U 13 girls for winning the Leinster First Year League.

U13 Girls beat Rathdown 1-0 in an exciting final on Thursday at Three Rock Rovers. Fantastically and fanatically supported by most of the Senior School girls. Led by Judy Fitzpatrick St Gerard's finally broke the deadlock early in the second half with a well executed goal Scored by Jennifer Courtney assisted by Elena Tice ( daughter of past pupil Scarlet Philips!). St Gerard's were worthy winners in the end with over 70 pct of possession. However Rathdown defended strongly through out. Great defending by Judy F and Pippa O Reilly ensured that St Gerard's won their first Leinster cup in over 20 years. A closely knit team that surely will go on to more glory as they move up through the Senior school. Well done one and all. Aisling Byrne,Mia Cullen, Sara O Loughlin were superb throughout this tough close encounter.

JCT Girls beaten in thriller in the dying seconds...

The JCT team opened up an early 2-0 lead against Alexander college in the Semi Final of the JCT Cup at St Gerard's this afternoon. It is amazing how momentum can change as fast as the wind. Within 10 minutes Gerard's were cruising with two great goals and total domination. Alex however had other thoughts and were soon back in the game with a goal by Zikka O Donoghue (daughter of Shirley O Reilly who ran Montessori in St Gerard's up to 15 years ago).

By half time it was 2-2 with Alex piling on the pressure. St Gerard's came out fighting in the second half but neither side could break the deadlock. Alex on balance had more chances but some magnificent goal keeping by St Gerard's ensured that extra time was looming. However Alex got a short corner just as the umpire was blowing his final whistle. On the second take, Alex seized the opportunity and won 3-2 . The home crowd were well and truly silenced as both teams started to shake hands. A bruising game where both teams gave 100 pct ended in inequality. Alex are now into the final of both the League and the Cup. Hopefully St Gerard's will get a chance of revenge as they still hold a semi final of the league match.

Hockey is on the up and up...Great effort GIRLS.....keep up the intensity....

  • Gutsy Effort from SCT

    WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN !!!!

SCT- St Gerard's were beaten by Roscrea  18-14 in close encounter at Donnybrook yesterday afternoon.

It was really a game of two halves, with St Gerard's dominating the second half but failing to turn that domination into points.

Roscrea got off to a flier, scoring twice in the right hand corner in the opening fifteen minutes to lead 13-0.

St Gerards only then started to settle and get into the game proper. An easy penalty by Crosbie on the twenty minute mark

Was this the start of the St Gerard's comeback. In fact to many observers it looked like St Gerard's had scored under the posts ten minutes from half time.

However on consultation with the touch judge a penalty was awarded to Roscrea!

Trojan work by CONAN,Hacket Delaney and Symes, up front and great running by Shiel and Desmond ensured that despite trailing 18-6 at H-T it was game on..

St Gerards completely dominated the second half. Roscrea seemed to be content nursing their lead, and were happy to give up penalties whenever Gerard's threatened their line.

This spoiling tactic resulted in one sin binning, and ultimately paved the way for a Roscrea/Clongowes final on St Patricks Day.

Conan seemed to be too generous in passing out a wayward pass to his wing when many felt his momentum would carry him over despite being well tackled by the last Roscrea defender.

Another opportunity missed was a decision to go for a difficult penalty attempt(missed) with 8 mins to go when surely a kick to the corner was the better option. Wojnar and Prendergast had been magnificent in the line out all day.

All in all it was a gutsy effort from a team who probably now will have to show their true potential when they probably meet Roscrea again in the final of the League.

As past pupils and players it was a pleasure to witness  such a gutsy performance that just fell short on the day. Well done SCT team of 2011 and to an excellent coaching staff lead by Eric Miller.

  • Our first blog from Mr. Mc Mullan - Rugby Cup History

This blog is the first of a series of blogs to come from Mr. Mc Mullen or more fondly known as Mic Mac!

On Sunday next, March 6, our SCT takes the field in Donnybrook for the sixth time (and second semi-final) in two seasons. This is a far cry from when I first arrived in St. Gerard’s to be greeted with the proud proclamation that we had just won the Thirds League. (This was in 1976 and we had no sixth years until the following year). Still, “Tall oaks from little acorns grow” and all that and I certainly knew that I had arrived in a serious rugby playing school. Within a year, we were playing in the Leinster Senior Cup and have continued doing so every year since. Indeed, we had by now produced a schools international, in Conor Jennings (ever heard of him?). Along side him, on the St. Gerard’s team featured such notables as Delamer, Roy, Duffy, Patchett et al of whom we have heard a lot over the years (notably from the then headmaster Michael O’Horan - I’ll not go on!!!).

I know how iniquitous it is, in this context, to mention names (as inevitably deserving cases are inadvertently omitted) so I’m going to avoid that as much as possible. What I would like to do is to draw the attention of those interested to what I consider to be major stepping-stones along the way to the heights of the past few years. After a few near misses in the cup, we eventually won our first trophy – the Herculean efforts of John Carlos and Fergus Nolan finally paid off on March 21, 1982 with the winning of the Leinster Senior Plate. These are the words of a scribe of the time describing our win “Then, with only five minutes remaining, Eoin Gallagher collected another well-won scrum ball on the half-way line. The ball reached right wing Conor Smyth, who delivered an inch-perfect pass to full-back Ivan Power. Ivan then proceeded to bring the crowd to its feet with a scintillating run along the right flank. As he dived over to score the match-winning try, every St. Gerard’s supporter and player raised their arms in jubilation. The last few minutes seemed like an eternity and then referee, John West, blew the long-awaited whistle. St. Gerard’s had won! Celebrations lasted well into the night at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Gallagher”.

I still have the video of that match in my possession!

Just for the record, to win the plate that year we had to defeat St. Mary’s, Wesley and Gonzaga before our final victory over St. Michael’s in the final.

By the way, there is an interesting reference in the school diary for Feb 9, 1985, to a “cheer practice led by an enthusiastic Denis O’Reilly encouraging all”. 26 years later and he’s still at it. We won a Senior Cup match that year v CUS (13 – 4) so let’s hope that Denis’s enthusiasm leads to an equally happy outcome next Sunday.

In 1987, Willy Morton became the first St. Gerard’s back to play for Leinster. Forwards Conor Jennings (78), Ian Duffy (80), Cian de Buitlear (85) and Ciaran McNamee (85) had all donned the Leinster jersey in the previous ten years. Ian Duffy also toured Australia with Ireland Schools in 1980. I am not sure if Ian Sherwin played for Leinster schools in his time, but, if he didn’t, in my opinion, he should have! In 1989, Conor O’Hara was selected for Leinster. In the same year, Justin Costello’s team had a cup victory over a fancied High School side “with Conor Costigan landing a well-executed drop-goal to win the match”.

In 1990, Mark Reilly played for Leinster Schools. (In the same year, our Juniors won section A of the Leinster Junior Cup with John-John Costello as captain. That same year (1990), the school undertook a highly ambitious and successful Boys’ hockey/rugby tour to Canada.

In 1993, John-John Costello’s team reached the Plate final, defeating Gonzaga and KH on the way before succumbing to Belvedere College in the final at Donnybrook.

In 1994, Ross Doyle’s team reached the quarter-finals for the second time (Paul Dempsey’s team having achieved this milestone years before) losing in the last three minutes to Castleknock. It was heart-breaking stuff but the season finished on a high note when we beat Pres. 13 – 3 in the local Derby – a rare occurrence in those days. That year, Shane Hunt (now a coach with the St. Michael’s SCT) was on the team and was also selected for the U.18 Leinster hockey team. Captain Ross Doyle went on to acquire an AIL winners’ medal with St. Mary’s on the same day as Eoin Costigan won the equivalent in the Spanish championship!

In 1995, David Nolan toured Australia with the all-conquering Leinster schoolboys. He was also selected for the Irish schoolboys XV.

In 2002, Niall Clauberg’s team reached the quarter-finals with a 27 – 0 win over CUS. We lost 14 – 13 to Castleknock and thus failed to make it to the semi-final.

In 2003, Alan Scanlan’s team lost 13 – 11 to CBC in the semi-final of the Vinnie Murray Cup but went on to record a 15 – 7 victory over Kilkenny College in the Senior Cup proper but lost out to Belvedere in the next round. That same year, Shane Canavan became our latest Leinster cap.

In 2004, Tony O’Kane’s team won the Vinnie Murray and Tony himself became our second schoolboy international (including playing in a victory over England, in England!) and Zach Desmond became a Leinster player and an All-Ireland Senior Rugby training panellist.

We were by now well into the ‘golden age’ of St. Gerard’s rugby which reads as follows:

2004  -  Winners of Vinnie Murray Cup (Captain Tony O’Kane)

2005    -  League finalists and cup semi-finalists (played in Landsdowne Road

                  with captain Zach Desmond)

    2006    -  Kyle Tonetti – Ireland U. 19

                  Burschi Wojnar – Ireland U. 19

Cailbhe Doherty – Leinster U. 18 – rugby scholarship to UCD

2007    -  Plate final. Max Duffy plays for Canada

2008    -  Gareth Crotty (Capt.) wins rugby scholarship to UCD

    2009    -  Win Leinster Senior League. Stephen Toal-Lennon U. 19 Leinster.

Jordan Egan UCD rugby scholarship Capt.

2010    -  Win Leinster Senior League for second time and reach semi-final of

Leinster Senior Cup defeating Terenure and Blackrock College

along the way. Captain Robbie Glynn. Josh Glynn, Jodie Crosby and

Jack Conan play for Leinster. Jack Conan plays for Ireland.

Rian O’Loughlin, Robin Maxwell and Adam Bowtell also wear blue

                  of Leinster.

2011    – Already qualified for League final and Cup semi-final (both still to be

                 played).

Whatever success we have had in recent years is as a result of the flame that was kept alive by St. Gerard’s teams over the decades. Great credit is due to all our coaches, mentors and supporters since our first entry into the Senior Cup in the late ‘70s. That is why we are asking you to turn up in your thousands next Sunday in Donnybrook – the day belongs to all Gerardians past and present. The current squad, I can assure you, fully merits whatever plaudits it has been offered so far. Please be there to proudly support the team that represents the school that you all attended.

    To be continued ………

  • St Gerard’s grind out a win over Kings Hospital to advance to Semi Finals !

St Gerard’s will meet the winners of Terenure/Roscrea On Sun March 6th in the Semi finals of the Powerade Senior Cup.

They managed to beat Kings Hospital 22-17 today ay Donnybrook in a close run contest where the result was in the balance

Right up to the final whistle. St Gerard's took an early lead with a Steve Crosbie penalty after just 5 minutes. Kings Hosp equalised three minutes later.

10 minutes later St Gerard's got their chance when the ball was passed out the back line smoothly from a solid scrum.

Simon Smith scored easily in the corner, which was converted by Crobie who brought his kicking game with him today. The rest of the first half was all about defending the constant pressure from Kings Hosp. They were rewarded on the 33 minute mark by their number 8 who scored in the corner, which was then converted by Josh Hinde.

The last 5 mins of the half was relentless pressure with Kings Hosp camped inside St Gerard's 22. The referee was the wrong side of a maul that looked like a try from those sitting in the stands. St Gerard's defended stubbornly to leave the score at 10-10 going into the break.

St Gerard’s were more cohesive in the second half and after 38 mins, Crosie slotted over a penalty to give them a narrow lead. But Luke Satchwell the Kings Hosp tireless number 8 had other plans, and scored shortly after, which was duly converted. Crosbie added another penalty on the 48 minute mark that left St Gerard's trailing 16/17 with just twenty minutes to go. A nail biter was in store for the last 20 minutes..

St Gerard's moved into attack mode and started playing with great rucking, mauling and smooth passing. On the 70 minute mark a planned play resulted in a Crosbie drop goal that gave Gerard's that vital lead. Now Kings Hosp were on the back foot and had to go into attack mode instead of protecting their one point lead. St Gerard's defended brilliantly in the last 10 mins. They were awarded a penalty with a couple of mins to go, that Crosbie duly slotted between the uprights. There was no coming back from Kings Hospital, and St Gerard's got their reward, a third Semi final in six years. We eagerly await the encounter on March 6th. If they bring their A game then surely anything is possible!!!

  • ST GERARD’S BAG QUARTER FINAL SPOT WITH VICTORY OVER CUS

CUS played the first half with a strong wind behind them that gave them a huge tactical advantage. However it was St Gerard's who scored first early when Steve Crosbie slotted his first penalty after just 5 minutes from just outside the 22 metre line in front of  the posts. With the head wind it must have felt like 40 metres!

Less than 5 minutes later a penalty was awarded from a similar spot that Crosbie duly kicked. CUS retaliated well on around the 20 minute mark with a good try in the corner which their out half failed to convert. A CUS penalty followed shortly thereafter  from sloppy St Gerard's play that gave CUS an 8-6 edge.St Gerard’s regrouped and just before half time, after a good run of cohesive play Steve Hackett Delaney charged over to give Gerard's a slender 11-8 lead going into the interval.

Jack Conan ( grandson of Boss Conan a teacher in late 1960s and son of a past pupil) was a colossus at No 8.
Feeding great ball to his scum half often when the set scrum was under pressure.

With the wind at their backs St Gerard's always looked the stronger in the second half. An early try by Oisin O'Neill  secured the two score lead that always had CUS on the back foot fighting an uphill battle. Crosby's boot was a bit off in the second half but he did manage to kick a penalty with 10 minutes to go leaving his side 19-8 to the good. CUS did respond with a solid effort of constant pressure that resulted in an well deserved and executed try 2 mins before regulation. St Gerard's very cleverly kept the ball in the forwards and held on to possession for most of injury time, and victory was theirs!

There were moments of slick well timed and executed play but also patches of slopping tackling and unnecessary knock ons.

This team looks like they have more to give and we look forward to their next encounter against Kings Hospital on Tuesday 15th Feb at 15:00 Donnybrook.
